Sleeping…not always an option

This is VERY long. I make no apologizes.  It is life-changing. GET OUTSIDE YOUR BOX. Make a difference in your relationship with your Lord and yourself.  Super-natural living will become yours in ways beyond words.  But you have to want it.

There has been a “rush” on friends who can’t sleep and worry because they are not sleeping.  One friend of many years has an appointment with her Doctor this coming week to see what he can give her to sleep.  She feels fine otherwise.

This is a problem for all of us, some of the time.  I want to encourage you to do something about it.  God knows we have that problem – and gives us the golden opportunity of a lifetime to lay there in bed and memorize His Word.

“Well, my husband wouldn’t like it.”  “Well, it would be too awkward.”  “Well, then I really would be awake!”  Well!  Well!  Well!   Why don’t you simply say you don’t want to and be done with it. It takes DISCIPLINE.  How well I know!!!!

I am an old woman.  84. My doing-anything-that-I-did-ten-years-ago is over. Health and strength is going out the window.  Don’t tell me I have years yet ahead of me.  That is stupidity at it’s height!! Even if I DO, every one of them are weakening years.  So let’s be real about life right now.

Let me tell you first about my husband.  He spent years memorizing the Word.  He had all kinds of file cards with typed verses on them.  Then he had MANY cards that had just the Scripture listed and not the verse.  This meant those vss. were memorized.  One card might have 15 vss. on it. He had a method for going over them each week besides memorizing more along the way.  Some times in the morning I would say to him, “Did you have a good night’s sleep?”  His reply would be, “Didn’t sleep a lot so I started at Gen. and went through to Rev.”  He did not have a dozen memorized in each of the 66 Books.  In Lam. he had only two, for instance.

We are given a gold mine of time to put God’s Word in our hearts and minds. But we don’t do it because we do not want to GET OUTSIDE THE BOX.  We were taught when we go to bed, we go to sleep.  HOGWASH!!!!

How can we get over this hump?  THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.  Just because it is breakfast time does not mean we can eat only eggs and bacon. If you had a roast yesterday shred a bit of that tender meat and mix it with Ramon noodles and eggs and cheese. A dab of sour cream on top with a hot biscuit. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.

My mind was developed in a far different way than my husband’s. I have had to work for every single thing that I have because I was not brought up as he was.  But that becomes an excuse.  I have strived to learn. The pattern for him back then, is the pattern for me today.  The pattern for me today, is the pattern for you tomorrow.  Here it is.

Get file cards. Use black ink pen. Write a verse on the card with the “address” in the upper RH corner.  Always in the same place. Get a tiny flashlight. (Mine is 3″ long and half an inch in diameter.) The light from it is huge.  You will lay on your side turned away from your mate and be sure your shoulder is covered at least with your sheet.  Keep your card and your light UNDER the covers.  Only have the light on long enough to get a portion of the verse seen, then turn it off and work on what you just saw.

How do you get started?  Well. It is different for us all.  But my way can be a starter for you.  BUT YOU HAVE TO WANT TO. Once you can climb over this problem here is how to proceed.

Take three file cards and lay them out before you on your desk.  One will be your MASTER CARD.  One, the WORKING CARD and one, the VSS. IN WAITING CARD.

MASTER CARD. Write down every vs. that you already know by memory.  Don’t write out the vs.  Write only where it is found, i.e. John 3:16. Rom. 3:23, etc.

WORKING CARD. With black ink pen write out the vs. that you want to memorize and put it’s address in the upper RH corner ALWAYS.

These, the MASTER CARD and the WORKING CARD, are the ones you put on your nightstand.

The WAITING CARD is always on your desk. This is the one that as you have seen vss. that you know speak to your heart, you list them and they are “waiting” to be placed in your mind’s library.

When Loren was on the home stretch of his life,  I was constantly in the library of my mind searching for the right verse for the moment.  The moments changed quickly.  I remember the moment of his last night in his bed.  When he awoke the next morning, he said, “I don’t think I know how to get out of bed”. I remember saying to him as cheerfully as I could, “That’s what I am here for and I will help you every step of the way.”

Actually all I had to do was to get him into the wheelchair which I had right there beside him, and then over to the lavatory.  That I did.  Then I turned away to do something else and as I looked back I could see, he did not know what to do next.  I went over to him and said, “let me help you dress and then I will fix your oatmeal and raisin toast.  (That was his favorite breakfast.)  It came to be known as his last meal on this earth. By mid morning he was resting/sleeping in his lift chair and he never woke up again).

We were rapidly closing up shop and I was franticly grasping for verses. that kept me stabilized without breaking down.  These are the stages of life that we do not know when they will come upon us. BUT I AM TELLING YOU, GOD IS FAITHFUL ALL THE WAY. HE KEEPS US STABILIZED. Sometimes our loved one is old but many other times they are much younger in years.  IT IS TOO LATE THEN TO BE GRASPING FOR THE WORD.  What you don’t know now, won’t be there when you need it.

The needs that you have at 50 are far different than the needs you have at 70, or 80.  Prepare for them NOW while God is giving you the time to do so.

Decide that you are going to do some memory work when you can’t sleep.  GET OUTSIDE THE BOX OF YOUR LIFE.  Take a week and bring to mind vss. that you have known or read that meant something to you and right the address down on a card and put the card on your desk where you can see it and as others come to your mind, write them down then and there! This is your WAITING CARD that you leave on your desk.  (DON’T CLUTTER UP YOUR NIGHTSTAND.  Then he won’t complain)

You want your MASTER  CARD of memorized vss.  and the WORKING CARD with the vs. you are working on, on your nightstand. The MASTER CARD can be your weekend CARD. It is simply your review card as it has on it all the vss. you have memorized to date. Then take a whole week to be sure you have memorized the verse on your WORKING CARD, when you are sure of it then you transfer it over to the MASTER CARD and rubber band the verse card that you just memorized in a group of already memorized cards. Move on to the next memory vs to be memorized

Let me give you a few vss. that helped me beyond measure. Read them through and see how they can supply a certain type of “need” for a person going through situations that cannot be altered or changed.

Isa. 33:6  “And He shall be the stability of your times.”

Isa. 45:4  “I will take care of you all of your life. Yes.  Even when your hair is white with age.  I made you.  I will take care of you.  I will carry you along and be your Savior.”

2 Chron. 20:17  “Do not be afraid – Do not be discouraged – Go out to face tomorrow and the Lord will be with you!

Psa. 103:1  “Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”

Psa. 23:1 “The Lord is my Shepherd.  I shall not want.”

Psa. 91:1  “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust’.”

Moses wrote two of the Psalms, Psa. 90 and 91. They even read differently than the rest of the Psalms. The depth that he wrote with begs to enter our hearts.  He is my refuge and He is my God.  I do and I will always trust You Lord.  Thank You for loving me and caring for me even in all of my unlovely times of life. (Do you see how you can apply them to life – to your very being!!!!!!!!!! )

These vss. give various solutions to our day’s stamina needs.  Isa, both vss., reaffirm that we have His attention for our urgent needs.  We also need praise vss. for the same type of needs. and Psa. 103:1 can be used over and over again.

Also – you will probably turn to your Bible to find these vss. and you don’t read AT ALL what I have printed out for you.  That is because I went to Bible Gateway long ago, and there they list any verse you want in all of the different versions, etc. and you pick the one that speaks to your heart the most.  THAT is the one you memorize.  Simply because you have always used the same BIBLE does not amount to a hill of beans. You want the wordage that speaks to your heart. And with our age, we change within. Forget the thees, thous, and thines. GET OUTSIDE THE BOX.  AGAIN….remember.  How you were at 50 or 60 is not how you are when you are 70 or 80.  Our needs change rapidly.  Believe me!!!!

My friend, you can do this, but you have to WANT to.  Some night when you seem too tired to want to do any memory work, lay there and speak in your heart to your Lord praise vss.  “Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name” I want nothing except the security that I have with You as my Shepherd.  How I need you tonight. Bless Your holy name,  Bless the Lord O my soul”. Before you know it, you will be asleep.

Or take Isa. 33:6.  “And He shall be the stability of your times.” Thank You Lord, for being the stability in my life.  Thank You for assuring me that for each of my “times”, you will be there and be my stability.  I can not do this without you.  Thank You for being with me in all of my times and needs.”

You see how you can take these vss. and make them live in your life!!!!!!!!  Don’t pass up the opportunity to own the gold that God is waiting to hand you. You will be rich beyond measure and how it will profit you when the hard times come.  My friend, they may be much closer to you than you think.  You may be in the calm before your storm right now.

Secure….in and through…Him
