Breaking The Bonds
As a little boy I remember attending a meeting where an evangelist called to the platform a big, powerful man and sat him in a chair. The evangelist took a string and put it around the man seated in the chair and told him to break it. The man broke it easily. The evangelist then took the string and wrapped it around him three times, and the man broke it. But then the evangelist took that string and wrapped it around the man many times, and that big man did all in his power to break that string and failed. He was bound.
That is how Satan works on us. He begins slowly, and we do not even realize the hold he eventually has over us. I must war against Satan! I must resist him! But how? A person can never find strength in himself to oppose Satan; we are no match for him. Satan is too deceptive, too shrewd, and too strong for flesh and blood—we lose the battle before we begin. How does a person stand to face Satan? He does it by faith in God. It is not enough just to turn over a new leaf; we must thrust the spirit of uncleanness out of us, but that is not enough. Our hearts are then empty and make easy places for Satan’s demons to fill.
So what do we need? We need the power of God to resist Satan’s attacks. We must let Jesus come into our hearts. We will then have the Spirit of Jesus, and when a person has the Spirit of Jesus in his heart, the evil spirit has no place to dwell.
